And for a second I had an odd sensation, as if my mind
left my body and I could see us from outside, looking through the
windshield, as we sat side by side in the Chevrolet. I was driving my
favorite car at the moment, the one that made my mouth water a little
and never failed to bring a distorted smile to my half-burnt face when I
had a chance to drive it, and next to me was the most beautiful girl I
had ever seen, wearing a pretty white dress that looked ethereal under
the artificial light of the streetlamps.
Yet my shoulders sagged. There were blood stains on that pretty white
dress and the girl had not spoken a word since I found her in the
ladies’ room.
